Do you see that ocean of bright lights in the middle of this photo? Those are the data centers near the airport. And this is what I hate most about data centers near where I live: they light them up like Christmas trees every night. Apparently, they're not high tech enough to have Security that doesn't rely on lighting up the place like daylight. While everyone is whining about #SpaceX putting up #satellites to clutter the night sky, I would just like to SEE the night sky. #FuckAI #NoAI
@RunRichRun @mlanger @sundogplanets I wonder if careless lighting is a sign of careless security?
@skyglowberlin @RunRichRun @sundogplanets I wish someone would use the bulbs for target practice. There are enough NRA yahoos around here to pin it on.
@mlanger @skyglowberlin @RunRichRun Have you gotten in touch with your local amateur astronomy club? They often have a lot of great resources and know-how to fight bad lighting practices
@sundogplanets @skyglowberlin @RunRichRun I don't think we have an astronomy club in the area. Seriously, the light pollution from the city of Wenatchee makes it very difficult to observe the night skies. The only time my house ever gets dark at night is when it's foggy. And we don't have street lights here. And nobody in these data centers really cares about the light they are emitting. Remember, I'm in the red half of a blue state and politicians don't care much about nature or science here.
@mlanger @sundogplanets @skyglowberlin @RunRichRun the Methow Valley does have a dark sky nonprofit, maybe they could help? https://www.methowdarksky.org/
I see there is a Wenatchee Valley Astronomy Club on facebook, but no idea how active they are.

Methowdarksky

@kajord @sundogplanets @skyglowberlin @RunRichRun I’m not on Facebook.

The skies are very dark up the Methow. And even on the Waterville Plateau. I’ve got a great view of Wenatchee from my home. That’s nice during the day and pretty at night, but it means nothing is dark here.

Wenatchee Valley Astronomy Club - Dark Sky Week Events

This year International Dark Sky Week is April 13-20, 2026. International Dark Sky Week is a global celebration of the natural night, inviting everyone to step outside, look up, and rediscover a sky filled with stars. IDSW introduces newcomers to the idea of light pollution and highlights how

@sundogplanets @skyglowberlin @RunRichRun I guess what I'm really trying to say is that it's too late. There's no way in hell the necessary changes will be made to get our night skies back.
@mlanger @skyglowberlin @RunRichRun But you see, that's the nice part about light pollution. It's completely reversible! All you have to do is turn the lights off. (Which is a surprisingly political action sometimes)
