I am a bit mystified how that works in practice for the buyer, but from what I understand, a buyer can go to their favorite indie bookstore, and the bookstore can access the bookshop.org catalogue.

At that point on I am a bit unclear how the payment to the bookstore results in the eBook being on the buyer's device.
