I was going to switch to #Proton’s email and calendar services but they don’t integrate with native iOS apps. I understand why but I really need this, especially the calendar. Is there a #privacy-oriented service that does this?
#infosec

@flup fastmail? They have a 30 day trial so you can test.

How the iOS calendar is designed it only really works with Google, Microsoft offerings.

Not to mention with encrypted email providers you won’t be able to because that would mean compromising the encryption.

@justincrozer thanks! iOS calendar supports caldav so in principle should be able to do other providers… but I don’t know the limitations of that.

@flup usually server side changes so encrypted email providers aren’t possible so they have their own apps as you found out.

I don’t understand the technical details on why the encrypted email providers don’t work with it but it’s how the encryption protocol is if I’m not mistaken but everything that isn’t end to end is always encrypted in transit and at rest (you’d hope) so fastmail should be able to be set up like iCloud mail and calendar would normally work for iCloud.com addresses.

@flup this should get you started even with manual set up it has support you’re after https://www.fastmail.help/hc/en-us/articles/360058752914-Set-up-iOS-devices-manually#setupguide

@justincrozer Thanks, I’ll give it a look.
@flup @justincrozer it works with my self hosted caldav server so I imagine it’s going to be fine with something run by people who know what they are doing

@flup

I’ve been really happy with #Posteo. Works with iOS and macOS mail apps (and others) and their customer service is excellent. 100% green energy powered too.

Email green, secure, simple and ad-free - posteo.de -

Posteo is an innovative email provider that is concerned with sustainability and privacy and is completely ad-free. Our email accounts, calendars and address books can be synchronised - we use comprehensive encryption.

@flup

Should clarify that I’m only using Posteo for email. I haven’t explored their Calendar offerings but there’s a lot of info on their website.

@flup Fastmail is my go to. Native integration with iOS calendar, contacts and mail apps works flawlessly too.

@flup hmm…

privacy != convenience.

I opted for #infomaniak which works with regular protocols (IMAP/SMTP) but it's hosted in Switzerland at least

(and it's very cheap and works great ;) )

@wojtek At the moment I’m just keen not to have my shared calendars at Google. E2EE is a bridge too far for the people I share them with unfortunately! Thank you for the recommendation!

@flup was in the same boat. got my own domain and at first used mailbox.org but it's compatibility left a lot go be desired and then found infomaniak.

if you only need mail / calendar(tasks) / contacts I can recommend basic Mail Service (https://www.infomaniak.com/en/ksuite/service-mail) which is dirty cheap - 1,5€ monthly for 5 unlimited mailboxes (you can cover family)

Service Mail - Secure Swiss messaging for your e-mails

Simply migrate to Service Mail. The ethical mail service hosted in Switzerland.

@flup
Check out @mailbox_org they should work with native apps on iOS.
@flup I switched to mailbox.org a couple of years ago and email and calendars work perfectly with my Mac laptops and iPhone.
