Republicans are nothing if not flexible:

Time and time again, they have argued against putting boots on the ground, but — magically — Trump sending the US marines to attack the Iranian island of Kharg is not boots on the ground.

Except it is.

@randahl
As long as the oil is saved... 😡

@randahl
Iran has floating islands? I knew they used to be ahead of much of the world and have a lot of cool ancient architecture, but floating islands, that's so cool.

Maybe a further development of the hanging gardens of Babylon?

@randahl Marines on the island doesn't mean boots on the ground if we stop issuing boots. #loophole
@randahl I’m surprised Trump isn’t outfitting the marines with Florsheims, just so he can argue about not putting “boots” on the ground.
@randahl Easy to be flexible without a spine

Well you see they are Marines, not soldiers, and Marines wear boondockers instead of boots... So we are not putting boots on the ground, but boondockers instead.

@randahl Trump’s position right now is one of self inflicted idiocy. I’m glad that Europe on the whole is staying out of it. I’m disappointed that the UK is providing tacit support through use of facilities but we probably don’t have much choice.

I suspect one of his trains of thought goes like this: bomb the country, eradicate the leaders, invade, endorse new leader and offer to go away - but only once a deal has been signed for discount oil with an agents fee routed to a bank account somewhere on the QT. It’s just a mob shakedown at country level. And not very subtle. Even for an American.
