thinking about how foreign the concept of an "upgrade cycle" is to me. i use devices until one of the following happens:

  • i outgrow their capacity
  • they break and i cannot repair them any more
  • it is impossible to get software/firmware updates that work with it... plus a few years usually
  • (mostly a mix of 2 and 3 depending on the device)

    @whitequark What? People don't repurpose their old computers for CI?

    My 12 years old desktop computer (i7 4790) is there, from 2 upgrades ago. So is my previous PC and some friend's old test machine 🤣

    The steam decks are pre-production units from me and my colleagues. Only the NUCs and SBCs were somewhat bought for the purpose.

    Hopefully, #ci_tron will enable more devs to share their old machines with the world for Linux testing, thus keeping it working for longer.

    @mupuf @whitequark I'm going to steal the idea of holding DUTs with paper stands for Chromebooks, thanks
    @elly @whitequark IKEA is GOATed for the home infras 🤣
    @mupuf @whitequark the only problem with IKEA is that they're located in places that are nearly impossible to get to if you don't have a car. In every place I lived it's far and/or dangerous to get to (shout-out to nearly getting hit by a tesla in Strasbourg).

    If I would want to go to IKEA now, it would be an 1,5h trip... one way. By car it would've taken 20 minutes

    @elly @whitequark Sad to hear...

    IKEA has its own busses here, on top of the excellent public transport of the greater Helsinki Area.

    @elly @mupuf i use delivery, public transit is completely inaccessible anyway

    @elly @whitequark The latest idea: use Ikea's pegboard to house my development test farm.

    I used to have a bunch of mesh trays on my desk, but it was a giant mess and a dust magnet. Now I've flipped the major plane from horizontal to vertical and this saved me so much space and headaches! Now, I can make it grow without issue 🥰

    @mupuf @elly @whitequark I installed some hardware and cable/dongle/pendrive holders on those pegboards at home recently and it's great - if someone came up with a rolling shelf full of pegboard walls with a spacer to stop collisions, mmm, one can dream~
