"As for the stuff in your computer that pretends to correct your punctuation or grammar, disable it. These programs are on a pitifully low level of competence; they’ll chop your sentences short and stupidify your writing. Competence is up to you."

— Ursula Le Guin, Steering the Craft

@fullfathomfive what a gift she was to the world
@fullfathomfive
“Competence is up to you.” Ursula calls it.
Yes, she was a gift to the world. 🙂

@fullfathomfive A different perspective: the dyslexic, autistic and other folks who struggle to write for general audiences without "stuff in [the] computer" like spell and grammar checks in word processors are not incompetent.

By not considering these writers in such a take, we are reminded that exclusion and ableism can be perpetuated by quotes even from a darling like Le Guin

@TheDonsieLass She doesn't mention spell checkers. This is in a chapter on punctuation and grammar, and part of a larger paragraph where she's encouraging writers to develop their own style and not rely on what corporate software thinks is good sentence construction.

@fullfathomfive But she is describing grammar checkers: 'stuff in your computer that pretends to correct your punctuation or grammar'.

Some writers' 'style' relies on such support. To ignore our experiences is exclusionary. Given the reason some of us use those tools is our disability or neurodivergence, the quote -- especially out of context -- sounds like ableism.

If the quote holds value for you, great. Its sentiment lands differently for some disabled and/or ND folks

@TheDonsieLass @fullfathomfive perhaps she wasn't writing about your particular situation?
