There's a figure standing in the distance, small enough to be a rumour. The light behind them is doing something that light in photographs almost never does: it's being theatrical without being dramatic. It has the quality of the moment in a concert hall when the house lights dim but the music hasn't started — when the whole audience holds its breath at once and nobody has agreed to do this. The bark catches the glow and holds it the way old wood holds warmth.
