I just went down this rabbithole:
Me: "Why aren't fediverse replies showing up as comments on my #WordPress blog postings?"
Me: [searches all over, finds stuff about configuring this in the block editor, discovers that my theme does not support the block editor, spends hours trying to find a theme I can tolerate that supports the block editor, eventually realizes that actually the problem isn't the non-block theme, it's that I didn't have the #Webmention plug-in installed. *sigh*]
From an end-user perspective, it's annoying inbound #ActivityPub functionality in #WordPress requires a separate #Webmention plugin rather than being built into the ActivityPub plug-in.
This makes sense from a _protocol_ point of view, since full-fledged ActivityPub servers can function entirely without sending each other Webmentions, but it really doesn't make sense from a user experience point of view.
@jik why do you think the ActivityPub plugin NEEDs the Webmentions plugin?
Edit: I see you are having issues perhaps because of classic theme use.
@jik you don’t actually need the plugin.
Webmentions is a separate spec.
The AP plugin allows you to receive comments on your posts, check your settings they might be caught in moderation
@django 1) There are no comments trapped in moderation.
2) There is nothing on the ActivityPub plugin's settings page about replies, just about boosts and favorites.
3) Before I installing Webmention I was not getting fediverse replies as comments on my blog.
4) This article seems to confirm that Webmention is necessary for this: https://epiph.yt/en/blog/2025/a-guide-to-activitypub-and-webmention-in-wordpress/
If I don't need Webmention, that's great news, but in that case I don't know why fediverse replies are not showing up on my blog.
🤷
@django Note that I do get email notifications from the ActivityPub plugin when someone posts a fediverse reply to one of my posts. They just don't show up as comments on the blog. Furthermore, as far as I can tell the Fediverse Reactions block provided by the ActivityPub plugin doesn't actually display the text of replies either, it just displays reactions.
@jik if you go to the admin section do the comments appear there? It might be the way your theme is setup?
@django >if you go to the admin section do the comments appear there?
No.
@jik how does your ActivityPub (settings) dashboard look?
All green?
@django I don't know what you are talking about, there is no dashboard that I can see. I don't have "Welcome / Settings / Advanced", I have "Settings / Blocked Actors / Blog Profile / Followers / Following".
I have version 8.0.1 of the plugin, last updated 5 days ago. What do you have?
@jik Screen Options can reveal the welcome section, the welcome page might help diagnose an issue
@django Ah. Found the welcome page. It says 6/6 everything is fine.
@jik I suspect an issue with federation, might be worth posting in the plugin support forum!
