RE: https://fraxoweb.social/@frank/116239357905963886

I was thinking about alternatives to #Facebook #Marketplace.

Ideally, I think it would need to be part of the #fediverse

What if we create a #lemmy or #piefed instance dedicated to selling items.

A forum similar to #kijiji I guess

And then, posts are actually listings from users to sell/buy items.

Communities in lemmy/piefed are actually cities or regions. Maybe categories.

Would that make sense? Would something else do a better job?

@frank I need an alternative to Facebook for events - I created a knitting club in my neighborhood and I can't figure out how to keep people informed of location (cafés can't host us every single week so I sometimes have to change location) - fb is the only way for me to let people know the schedule. But not using fb regularly has also cut me off from knowing about things like shows happening in the city.

@catbrainz

My landlord collects everybody's phone number and send automated SMS updates on when the snow removal is coming.

Maybe something like this, or maybe a group chat.

@frank I considered sms/signal but I don't want my number to become public 😅 it's a neighborhood wide group. I considered a mailing list/newsletter but I'm not sure people read those. I guess I can give it a trial run.

@catbrainz

I don't think mailing list is the right tool for this, but you can give it a try.

For the phone number, you can either get an additional number for this purpose, or maybe a burner/temporary phone number.

Hi @catbrainz
If you are willing to host a service, there is https://docs.mobilizon.org/

That's a great tool to organise event! But like every online service, someone has to host it.
