Did I say Mastodon - Fediverse, on this β€œwhere did you hear about this survey?” Question? Yes I did!!

Hey Canadians! Go do the headlight survey at Transport Canada!

@chris Thanks for sharing! I just completed survey and also mentioned Mastodon.

Anyone who drives in Canada, or sits in the front seat of a car in Canada, should complete this survey.

Boost and share with everyone you know. Change only happens if we speak out.

Bright headlights are not safe.

@alexblock @chris Hi, one of your crazy downstairs neighbors here (New England). Total agreement on the too-bright headlamps. They're a menace. Good luck, elbows up.
@rickmurnane @chris Ah, you know the not so secret Canadian code! I was in Maine, New Hampshire and Boston in 2019 with my family on a little road trip. Wonderful countryside, a fun city. If we lived in the non-upside-down version of our world, I'd be back again. It is a pity the way things are. Stay safe, and come visit Canada any time. We're a welcoming bunch! Just drive during the day to avoid those headlights.... πŸ˜‰
@alexblock @chris My maternal grandfather was born in New Brunswick, and I have family in Ontario. Been there and Quebec numerous times on business and for fun. Friends from Nova Scotia to BC. So yeah, I know the code (wink). πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

@rickmurnane @chris Not a lawyer, but you might practically be a Canadian then:

@alexblock @rickmurnane Yes!

You could gain Canadian citizenship!

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/act-changes/rules-2025.html

(if you were born in the USA you never lose your USA citizenship, if that is a concern. You have to explicitly renounce it!)

@alexblock @chris Thanks for the link!
@rickmurnane @chris No time like the present to download application forms!
@alexblock @chris I'd heard the first-gen change was underway last year. I will be looking into it. Thanks again for the links and encouragement!
@rickmurnane @chris My pleasure. Maybe one day we'll hear you've submitted an application or have become a Canadian! My folks made the decision to emmigrate from the UK back in the 1970s. Best decision they made! The opportunities here shaped our future in such positive ways. I cannot imagine my life had we stayed in the UK. Canada has been good to us.
@rickmurnane @alexblock @chris I know it's a bad idea, but I want a mirror bumper sticker for this reason.
@PacificNic @rickmurnane @chris I will confess to adjusting my side view mirror to reflect bright headlights (and to keep light out of my eyes). That said, I doubt many of us buy a car specifically because it has bright lights, and most people don't even it any thought.

@chris Filled it out.

This is such a pain in the eyes.

@chris I don't drive regularly, and I filled it out. Headlights are getting annoying as a pedestrian.

@chris

THANK YOU for sharing!!

I will be sharing this every way I know how.

@chris
Done! Can’t even sit outside on the front porch anymore because oncoming vehicles literally blind us.
@chris Thank you for the pointer. This has been a problem for me, a cyclist for years. Once nearly killed by oncoming car with extra bright lights which made it impossible to see it was signaling left turn (into my lane).
@chris Done. I only drive about once every 3 months or so. Last time I drove on a highway at night, I was really shocked how blinding those new headlights are. Glad I don't have to experience it regularly.

@chris Done.

I find they brighten everything other than the road itself, which is quite important when the road markings aren't that visible during night time.

@chris

Good one. Done. My new-to-me car has "autodimming" ... and it's not great. I leave it off.

And I did as you did with MastoFedi

@chris
Done! For the "what can alleviate night glare" question, I put "alternatives to night driving like better public transport services at night".

@chris

Done.

The Smart ForTwo has decidedly wimpy headlamps which, as a cyclist-first person, I appreciate.

@chris I get to say I heard about it on the fediverse AND complain about headlights at the same time?? This is the best day of my life!

@chris ahh wasn't aware of this. Filled it out during my coffee break.

Suggested that headlights should not shine with the light of 1000 suns.

@chris

We've been able to buy cars with adaptive headlights for a few years now. They're not available on all cars unfortunately.

The headlights on the Lightning are adaptive. They turn into corners, have auto dimming that works really well, and will dip the driver's side light when encountering oncoming traffic.

Downside: I would not want to pay for a replacement headlight bucket though.

I'll still do the survey though.
