Good idea: Swear when lifting heavy stuff

Turns out there's actual science behind all that grunting and cursing at the gym. A study found that people who swear during physically demanding tasks can push themselves harder and last longer. In two experiments with 192 participants, volunteers did chair push-ups while repeating either a swear word of their choice or a neutral word every two seconds. Those who swore were able to hold their body weight for significantly longer. The researchers think it works by putting you into a more disinhibited mental state, loosening the psychological brakes that normally keep you from giving full effort. Participants who swore also reported higher levels of psychological flow, distraction, and self-confidence during the task.
And this isn't a one-off finding, earlier studies showed similar boosts in challenges like keeping a hand submerged in ice water. As Stephens put it, swearing is basically a free, calorie-neutral performance enhancer that requires no equipment and carries no banned-substance risk. The main caveat is that the study only tested short-duration strength tasks, so it's unclear whether the effect extends to longer endurance activities.
