How can we ever believe this outcome, after NACC had to be forced to investigate Robodebt?

Every action from Canberra over this has been about kicking the can down the road, trying to diffuse responsibility, sitting on their hands hoping people will forget. Now NACC is coming out with the most predictable outcome possible: punish a few bureaucrats but leave the politicians who designed and enthusiastically oversaw the scheme unscathed.

I am so sick of our political class in Australia. They don't care about people, or what's best for Australia. They only care about protecting their own. The NACC is just another accomplice.

Nothing they say will convince me Scott Morrison isn't culpable for Robodebt. He was the minister for social services, he oversaw the scheme. Our most vulnerable citizens suffered, struggled and died because of him. He bears ultimate responsibility.

Excellent article from Rick Morton about the failures of the NACC report into Robodebt. Rick literally wrote the book on Robodebt (it's called Mean Streak and it's great).

The tl;dr is that because of NACC's conflict of interest issues, the only person left at the Commission to do the report was an inexperienced deputy, who basically took Scott Morrison, Kathryn Campbell et al at their word when they said they didn't knowingly do anything wrong.

Morton doesn't say so, but it sounds like the findings were a foregone conclusion. They picked their scapegoats and it wasn't going to be the former PM and his crony.

The NACC robodebt report: A heartbreaking work of staggering incompetence

Rick Morton wrote the book on robodebt. He delivers a damning verdict on the NACC's long-awaited robodebt report, which exonerated Scott Morrison and Kathryn Campbell.

With the Robodebt report, NACC's role in Australia's political system is cemented: they are the cleaners. They tidy away messes and make nice little press releases clearing people of wrongdoing.

Got a stain on your reputation? Spray on a little NACC Report and it'll be gone before you know it.

@fullfathomfive It is clear that we were never going to get a NACC with teeth if it depended on bipartisan support so the system now does what it was intended to do.

At the very least Brereton needs to go, but really it would be best to just cancel the damn thing and start again. The LNP and PHON will be such a rabble that there will be no need to negotiate with them.

@DjityDjity The frustrating thing is that they didn't even need to do this! They had more than enough support from the Greens and the crossbench for a strong NACC. Albo watered down the legislation in pursuit of totally unnecessary support from the coalition, while ignoring what the public wanted.

A pretty good sign of how he was going to govern, it turned out.

@fullfathomfive they're just too scared that if they do indeed create a NACC with razor sharp teeth it will do an excellent job and then it will haunt them in 5 years time because of yet another Aldi bag with a random pile of cash in it ... @DjityDjity
@otte_homan @fullfathomfive yes, just as Western Australia's Crime & Corruption Commission stung so many politicians.
