@ShadowJonathan one day I will hook up a fax machine so my friends can fax me memes
@kebokyo
That was a primary use of the device. One site I worked at had a big binder full of fax proto-memes.

@ShadowJonathan

1. Do Germans rely on fax a lot more than the rest of the world? The joke is lost one me.

2. Is this really how I found out that the SPD lost their majority already? It feels like they were just elected.

@lycanmatriarch @ShadowJonathan yeah, Germany does, and so does Japan, surprisingly
@OctaviaConAmore @ShadowJonathan Japan surprises me less considering the way mobile phones were treated more so as mobile email devices.
@OctaviaConAmore @lycanmatriarch @ShadowJonathan Japan doesn't surprise me, because it's largely run by men in Their 70s who will continue.to use the same (1970-1989) technology until they die.
Germany did surprise me. Fax machines in 2026, really?

@lycanmatriarch
Six months ago there was a big announcement at work (a German / Dutch company). They were adding a new fax gateway for both sending and receiving. It got so many postive reactions you might have assumed out was a post announcing 30% salary increases.

@ShadowJonathan

@xinit @ShadowJonathan Meanwhile I'm doing a project at my job to move our fax services to a cheaper provider and I had one location head go "...I don't even think we use that, do we need that?"
@ShadowJonathan meanwhile, Japan:

At least nobody is using floppy disks anymore.

Isn't that right, πŸ—» ?

@wakame @OctaviaConAmore @ShadowJonathan

Ummm, no....I still have a few floppy disks and a floppy drive.

@[email protected] Oh man. I was thrift shopping yesterday and stumbled across 50 new-in-box floppies for $3 USD. It was so hard to pass them by.
@wakame @OctaviaConAmore @ShadowJonathan At least until not so long ago, German high speed rail was using floppy disks for seat reservations.
@livho @wakame @OctaviaConAmore @ShadowJonathan ok this *most likely* didn't mean, "they hand you a floppy and then they read it to check your reservation" but is what I thought at first and that would be hilarious.
@itsmaya @wakame @OctaviaConAmore @ShadowJonathan Would have been funny, but no. It was used to tell the computer which seats are reserved from where to where to show it at the seats.
@wakame @OctaviaConAmore @ShadowJonathan avionics still uses floppies and PCMCIA cards >_<

@itsmaya @OctaviaConAmore @ShadowJonathan

And here I thought that they...

...would get over-the-air updates.

ba-dum tiss

@ShadowJonathan all hail the mighty fax machine!
@ShadowJonathan I have that exact fax machine, except I'm from the US and have it solely because I collect retro tech lmfao
@ShadowJonathan we are planning to terminate our landline because the company has disabled all the copper lines :(
@ShadowJonathan I get the fax machine and the DIN-book... but the photo of Merz and the CDU election poster on the wall... She's crazy...
Yeah, why the hell does anyone still have a fax machine in the year of our Lord 2026?

@longbottle Germany didn’t receive the newest calendar yet it appears.

On a serious note; you really do still need a fax to do business in Germany; like contacting your health insurance if they mess up, as the only other option offered is to physically go by during their business hours. πŸ˜…

But why a fax *machine* and not just an email to fax service? Every time I've had to send or receive a fax (every five years at most) I just do that.
@ShadowJonathan here in the US, law offices still have fax machines. Some of the laws haven't been changed to allow transmission of some court documents via scanned email. Has to be mailed or faxed.
@ShadowJonathan how dare you throw such unfounded accusations around (/j).
Anywho, here is mine:
