Point is, that’s not what the quote directly said. And that’s what distinguishes journalism, and tabloids like DailyBeast (or talking heads/“analysis” like Fox News). Hence, every actual news outlet on this topic went with a factual headline, and quoted Trump directly instead of making a jump.
This distinction is very important to me. Ragebait like DailyBeast is why Trump is in power and the world sucks now, because it works.
I get your point, but the president saying people should get life in prison if not killed for their 1st amendment right which he swore and oath to uphold would be an absolute reason for an immediate impeachment to most.

No, that was bigotry, racism, billionaire-controlled media, voter suppression and foreign interference. The Daily Beast’s influence is lost in the noise compared to those factors.
And how likely do you really think it is that Trump would direct the captive, corrupt DoJ to exercise leniency? It’s tough, because I don’t want to give him or the American justice system the benefit of the doubt, but I really hate the misrepresentation of this in the media. Charging someone with treason doesn’t mean they’ll be imprisoned or executed, it means they’ll be put on trial. If this story had addressed the potential for the president to bias the country against these reporters by calling personally for them to be charged with treason, I would be a lot less annoyed by the headline, but it’s inaccurate and they didn’t put any actual investigation into this piece.
It might be splitting hairs, but I really do wish for exhaustive Nuremberg style trials when I call this regime criminal, treasonous, and genocidal. I wouldn’t mourn if a few of them didn’t make it to trial, but I don’t want them to be able to take their secrets to the grave en masse.

I loathe everything Donald Trump stands for, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to misrepresent what he says like that for engagement. There are more than enough appalling things the man does and says on a daily basis to not go that low.

No, they are just blind to context. It’s Trump. He is threatening a treason charge precisely because it carries a potential death penalty. He knows that, that’s why he’s making the threat, and he is vindictive enough to abuse the legal system to make an example of some poor scribbler.
I’m sorry but I’ve seen plenty of people lose their jobs and get a visit from SS because they mentioned Trump’s actions were treasonous. Which someone then interpreted as death threats. One side doesn’t get to do this and then play coy when they do it themselves.

And there’s a chain of reasoning that makes the headline more than bullshit: Trump is demanding journalists be put on trial for treason, which has a maximum penalty of death. Trump is a long-time advocate of brutal and excessive punishment for anyone not on his good side. The leadership at DoJ are all Trump syophants who take their direction from him. Ergo, any journalist who pisses off Trump is likely to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, if not beyond.
Short version: Trump was threatening journalists with the death penalty.
Additional research: the Central Park Five, where Trump demanded their execution even after they were conclusively exonerated.
It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if Trump shouted “I’m going to execute you!” at the top of his lungs while throwing a baby out the window, on film, in front of a million people; if the headline makes inferred jumps and sensationalizes the event, it is not a news article. Its opinion/talk or whatever label you want to call it.
And that is exactly why we’re here. Trump is a troll that thrives on tabloid journalism; everything that’s even a little exaggerated is just feeding him. It’s why he’s there. And I am very sensitive to the idea that “it’s really news because its true with these conditions and aligns with my beliefs” because thats the core operating mode of MAGA.
