An important note to everyone that plans to seek asylum:

[Please retoot for visibility]

Don't do asylum as the first thing, please consider immigration before asylum procedure, if you can. Asylum seekers face discrimination and various scrutiny, just because they reject the protection of their country by entering the procedure itself.

No matter where you flee from, you would face difficulty as an asylum seeker, be it inability to work, be it low government assistance, be it even lack of housing. It depends on where you flee, however you would still face difficulty, even if you have money set aside.

You would be asked to give out your passport, you would need to prove you are personally in danger of persecution. You would need a pretty strong case. You would be stuck in this gray status for months at best, for years at worst. You would also not be allowed to leave the country during all this.

FUR/HELP would be there to support you, however we nor anyone else can guarantee you a positive decision.

@YukiDeer An asylum system that does that to people is broken.

A country that actually cares does not take your passport or make an already hard situation for you harder.

@athamanatha Sadly, it's something that happens in all countries. You have to give away the identity documents that the state you fled from issued to you.

It is something that is a part of procedure, instead you are given paper temporary documents, that techincally are IDs in the country of your refuge, however it depends.

They almost always not considered IDs in other countries, and that can mean lots of restrictions, from inability to verify your age in VRChat just because you are an asylum seeker to opening a bank or even accessing some of government services.

@YukiDeer @athamanatha The asylum system IS broken but it is better than being sent back to a country that wants you dead. However most countries DO NOT WANT asylees. Thus they make the burden of proof very high, because they are still obligated by post-WW2 agreements to have asylum systems in place.
@kamiten Basically, and to be honest it's great we have a right to asylum, something that UN gave us, if only UN wasn't as useless later.

Do you have links for immigration info on Canada and its visas?

@athamanatha The best source for visas and immigration would be the Canadian government website:
https://www.canada.ca/en/services/immigration-citizenship.html

The easiest visa and immigration path depends on individual basis, but the universal way to move to Canada would be the Express Entry program or PNPs (Provincial Nominee Programs)
