Howard Lovecraft was an American horror and SF author who created the Cthulhu Mythos, a universe of ancient alien gods indifferent to humanity. Writing for Weird Tales, his cosmic horror — notably The Call of Cthulhu — went unrecognized in his lifetime but became foundational to the genre.
