Honestly not thrilled about the Firefly revival. Do we really need to go back to "lost cause postbellum Confederate soldiers in space" in the midst of everything right now? If you want me on board for this, how about: the first episode drops and the crew has to navigate to some backwater to help build more durable infrastructure BAM it's not Whedonverse at all we're actually doing Long Way to a Small Angry Planet baybeeeeeee

and Jayne gets left behind at minute six and is never spoken of again

@memnus Yeah, I would have been all over this any time up to about 2012, after that....not so much

@memnus On the plus side: Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project.

Doubt that will help, but at least we don't have to go through the sexual assault focused plotline he had planned for season 2 of Firefly

@memnus I loved Firefly tbh, but I'm fully on board for the Lilian version if a revival must take place.

@jack when the show was originally airing, so many people raved about it so aggressively that I put off watching it just to spite them. I STILL call this the Firefly Effect.

Then I watched it! And I enjoyed it!

@memnus Mal came *this close* to doing the right thing while leaving Ariel
@memnus that's interesting because I never thought of it as a neoconfederate analog. I always thought of it more as being similar to empire vs rebellion. Some things drawing off of westward expansion but without the indigenous people. The "savages" were us all along kind of thing. Then those that are bad are generally those with money taking advantage of others in need. Jayne I saw as a character on a long redemption arc to show that people that we consider dumb and sexist, etc can be redeemed.
@midi_mac @memnus all of what you are saying is true to the text of the show but the post you are replying to is talking entirely about metatextual factors to the show so that is why you are surprised. Basically you are talking about what the show presented itself as, but it was lying about who it was.
