New music service, tell me what you think: a guaranteed advert free playlist of around an hour of a particular artist's works, carefully curated and mixed by the artist themself. It gets better: pay one flat fee up-front for unlimited replays, even when offline!

...you've probably spotted that I'm just describing albums, but it increasingly sounds like a really good deal, doesn't it?

@Tattie Hm, are there ads on the music streaming services? Aren't you paying for these? Do they show ads to paying customers?
@theartlav apparently Spotify is USD$12.99/month for ad-free play. Or more for couples or families. How they enforce the latter is mystifying to me.

@Tattie absolutely.

What I really miss about early day spotify is their spot on music suggestions they had for me. So much new music that was really cool.

But that has probably changed in the past few years, too...

@Tattie And you wonder why I love #bandcamp.

@jaye @Tattie

And other old tech: radio. I love listening to BBC 6 Music. Exposes me to tons of sometimes great music I wouldn't hear otherwise.

#bandcamp

@Tattie

It's a great deal, I haven't found streaming services at all attractive compared to buying tracks and albums. Though I use iTunes smart playlists to randomize... I rather like having early Floyd followed by Bobby McFerrin, Ragtime, Jazz-Klezmer Fusion, and TMBG.

@Tattie It's depressing how much of technological change involves discovering that what we thought were limitations was actually denying capabilities to people with ideas worse than we could imagine.
@fuzzyfuzzyfungus yeah, physical media was portrayed as an inconvenience and a liability, but it turned out to be an important way of preventing us being baited-and-switched.
@Tattie You got me. I arrived at realisation just as your punchline hit.

@Tattie

Bandcamp.

@mterburg you're the second person to mention this, but I don't know what it is. I'm just thinking of American Pie...

@Tattie Those streaming services never appeared attractive to me anyway. I can't see any advantage to me over a local music collection. I'm glad I don't have any hassle with ads or recurring payments. I don't know what it is that I'd be paying for.

I'm still doing CDs, and Bandcamp downloads where no CD is available. So, mostly bandcamp downloads nowadays.
