TIL that Modi despite being ranked as one of the world's most popular democratic leaders in media only got votes from 16% of total indian population in 2024 election - Lemmy.World

Despite being called as world’s most popular democratic leader, Modi’s party and alliance only got votes from around 16% of total population(235,974,144/1.4Billion) (70% of population were eligible for 2024 elections). Factors causing this :- 1)A large number of eligible voters not voting is the primary reason for this phenomena.(A large number of indian population is employed in informal low wage jobs, most of the time they won’t go for voting because they won’t get paid leaves. ) 2)first past the post system instead of proporational representation amplies this issue . ( Despite opposition party getting 21.19voting %, they only won 99 seats in Congress/parliament whereas Modi’s party with just 36.56 voting% won 240 seats) 3)urban class are the major vote banks for Modi’s party
I mean there are only 4 countries (other than India) that have populations higher than that vote count. So yeah, unless China becomes democratic, India’s always going to have the most popular democratic leader regardless of how fucked up FPTP is.

This point is also kind of useless. So what if more people in his country like him more than the leader of any other country is liked by their respective voters? The only benefit of that fact is misleading others while telling the truth. It certainly highlights how broken FPTP is while also highlighting how many people there are in India.

This is a perfect example of: There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.
