TIL that Modi despite being ranked as one of the world's most popular democratic leaders in media only got votes from 16% of total indian population in 2024 election - Lemmy.World

Despite being called as world’s most popular democratic leader, Modi’s party and alliance only got votes from around 16% of total population(235,974,144/1.4Billion) (70% of population were eligible for 2024 elections). Factors causing this :- 1)A large number of eligible voters not voting is the primary reason for this phenomena.(A large number of indian population is employed in informal low wage jobs, most of the time they won’t go for voting because they won’t get paid leaves. ) 2)first past the post system instead of proporational representation amplies this issue . ( Despite opposition party getting 21.19voting %, they only won 99 seats in Congress/parliament whereas Modi’s party with just 36.56 voting% won 240 seats) 3)urban class are the major vote banks for Modi’s party

Modi’s party with just 36.56 voting% won 240 seats

It’s reassuring to know the UK has competition for the most broken pseudo-democracy.

First past the Post system of democracy is one of the biggest scams in the world
I wonder where India got its electoral system from…
India inherited from its mother British raj , but baby pakistan decided to go through different path…💔💔💔💔
I mean there are only 4 countries (other than India) that have populations higher than that vote count. So yeah, unless China becomes democratic, India’s always going to have the most popular democratic leader regardless of how fucked up FPTP is.

This point is also kind of useless. So what if more people in his country like him more than the leader of any other country is liked by their respective voters? The only benefit of that fact is misleading others while telling the truth. It certainly highlights how broken FPTP is while also highlighting how many people there are in India.

This is a perfect example of: There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.

You’ve used the entire population of India as the denominator which includes children, noncitizens and others not eligible to vote. If we’re looking at percentage of eligible adults: 24.3% voted for him. If we’re looking at vote share (percentage of total votes) it’s 36.6%.

The US based intelligence firm Morning Consult ranks leaders on approval ratings and he is often ranked high with a 65 to 75% approval rating, which plays into the perception:

Morning Consult

Non citizens account a small percentage of indian population (less than 1% of total population) , most of the non citizens in india are mostly people from Bangladesh or refugees from Pakistan , afganistan or myanmar. Total eligible population accounts for almost 70% if we exclude children , 36.6% vote share actually comes from total number of voters that have voted despite 70% being eligible , that’s why I said in my statement (2).

Approval rate of modi in morning consult is based on assumption excluding opinions of muslims , people in kashmir , and mainly south indians . 65-75% approval is a blanded lie because it is excluded non hindi/Urdu speaking population (especially dravidian language speaking group)

You hit the nail on the head.

Modi is a religious nutcake, and a racist.

BUT! He has the most important skill of any democratic leader: he gets good advisers and (at least some of the time) listens to them

Only 22% of the US voted for Trump, not much better.
What a timely TIL, dear CIA officer!
You’re unhappy with that fact?

India is not “The West” and is also asserting its status as a world power that won’t simply fall in line behind the US (i.e. being a BRICS state and continuing to buy Russian oil)

So naturally it is somewhat supported by Tankies who prioritize only opposition to the West. Since the West is obviously the antithesis of socialism, it is assumed that no socialist power can succeed as long as the West survives. So anything contributing to the disenfranchisement of the West is advocated for, regardless of how genocidal and antithetical to socialism that opposition may be.

Claiming that the leader of Indian works for the CIA is a wild take
I believe what they were trying to sugfest above is that questioning Modi’s legitimacy is a CIA conspiracy, not that Modi works for the CIA. The post draws into question just how “democratic” India’s elections are, so that is perceived as playing into a CIA plot.
Democratic leader? Modi?
India is more of an electoral autocracy, you can vote an autocrat , but medias often claim india as democratic
Could you explain the difference?
You can’t expect accountability or question government beyond a limit as you do in europe. Recently there was a protest in indian province named ladakh where protesters were demanding more regional autonomy, modi government suddenly deployed troops there and some people got killed when troops fired . Compare that with europe , police only fire the bullets as last resort. Modi is more like a dictator elected via first past the post system

democratic

Given Hindu supremacism in the BJP, Modi is anything but “democratic”.

Don’t forget BJP’s religious idiocy divorced from reality. So often associated with racism.

India overall getting less and less democratic

They keep attacking freedom of speech and encryption which is very problematic for a democratic country.

Modi government recently arrested a man named Sonam wangchuk for criticising modi , he even arrested his political opponent arvind kejriwal in false corruption charges. Free speech in india is at low level , last time india suffered extreme curbs on free speech was during the tenure of Indira gandhi
“Modi […] being ranked as one of the world’s most popular democratic leaders in the media” You (and everyone) should check out the Behind the Bastards episode on Modi, he is NOT a good person.
