I’ve never been across the border. I assume that if I cross. I will be interacting with Canadian border patrol, not US border patrol?

You interact with both sides, at least at the major crossings I’ve used. But the side you’re entering is typically the more stringent one. And yes, you’d be interacting with Canadian Customs and Immigration.
