Own Fingernails

we’ve got a lot of saints now
if you’re counting those innocents
neighbors, folks who did for others
comfort, compassion, care

we’ll ignore that their beliefs
may have lacked familiar gods
or sometimes gods at all
extinguishing ‘em was enough

asking for miracles as qualifiers
kid, in this day and age, kindness
well, the definition no longer
requires an outsider’s hand
