Thinking of buying an xteink x4. Look neat. Small. Epub only. Buttons. Magsafe. Not android. But no backlight. Done custom firmware are available.

Anyone have one?

#Xteinkx4 #ereaders

@tootbrute

@jp just ordered one so he could probably tell you about it soon.

I'm thinking I'll probably get one this summer.

@amin @jp I should just order it and spend more time reading.

Only 1600 NT.

Hmm...

@tootbrute I’m also mildly interested, though I’m not sure how much effort I can spare into adding one more device in my life.

Came across this relevant thread recently, some interesting insights from its actual use:

@tootbrute i have one and its a super cute tiny little thing. I like the buttons to turn page, because no accidental page turns. Standard Firmware after update is good. Only Problem are still fonts for different Languages, tried a few but was not very happy with it. Lets thay fir arround 70$ you don't do much wrong if you give it a try.

@rifka I heard you need to strip photos out of epubs or something?

What is the process/workflow of getting books on that thing?

@tootbrute No need to strip photos out of anything. 🤔 Never heard of it. To transfer books to the e-reader: remove the microSD card, connect it to your PC, create folders (Books, Wallpapers, Fonts, if desired), transfer the files, put the card back into the device, and you’re all set. Covers are included in the ebook files. If they are not, they cannot be displayed.
Btw that standard Software after last Update.

@rifka weird. forget where i read that. maybe they said you can't view pictures on there? or can't zoom? anyways....doesn't matter.

thanks for the details. you are running the default firmware right? not crosspoint? https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader

i might still get one. now that this reader is on my mind, i keep thinking...if i had this i could be reading right now. my kobo is almost 10 years old and back is falling off. not great to stick in my pocket.

@tootbrute yes default firmware with the last Update. I tried crosspoint, but was unable to install it. I also tried different fonts, but was very unhappy with the result, so default font. Please be aware that this thing is very tiny and without all the functions of an "big" reader, its just reading and nothing more. But its light weight, i can hold it with two fingers. The real question is: how much comfort do you need to read?

@rifka hmmm....well you've given me things to think about. i'll keep this in mind.

i need to make a mockup with carboard to 'feel' the size of this thing. hehe. thanks again for sharing with us on fedi.

@tootbrute just for "to get a feeling", two last Pictures of the size. Sorry for picture Spam
@rifka not spam. very useful.
@tootbrute and last one
@rifka tempted to get this button thing. Wonder how useful that would be.
@rifka oh no. Now I found this. Looks neat.
@tootbrute yeah, thats the same Reader, BUT with chinese software only. If you buy that one, you don't get the "international" Software

@rifka really? it looks like it's touch screen, smaller screen, worse quality screen. somebody has a picture of it side by side with xteink x4.

anyways, i'll still get xteink x4 though.

love all the crazy gadgets you can get on aliexpress. best part of living in asia.

bought it. AH. satisfaction. 9-20 days for shipping now.

@tootbrute I talked myself out of it. Touch screen and backlight are actually both really important for me for highlights and looking up words while reading in other languages. I believe they’re working on a small touch screen android device with a light too

@jiewawa yeah I want backlight but I don't want android

I might have to stick with kobo
