It’s a classic move, isn't it? Start a massive blue in the Middle East, realise the other side is actually swinging back, and then immediately look at us (and everyone else) like, "Oi, a little help here?" Nothing says leadership like lighting the match and then asking the neighbors to bring their own fire extinguishers to save the shed.

@static That’s the thing—last time an Australian PM even hinted at steering our own ship, the rug got pulled out from under us. Just look at Gough Whitlam in the '70s; the moment he started questioning the "status quo" and those bases, he was absolutely shafted. It’s hard to have a sovereign foreign policy when the landlord decides to evict the tenant for asking where the spare keys are.

@mojo That would indeed be a problem...

Now I'm wondering what "quiet words" have been said to Albo recently. :-/

@static It’s the ultimate "signed, sealed, delivered" situation, isn't it?
Scomo sets up the AUKUS deal and those eye-wateringly expensive nuclear subs, then Albo walks in and doubles down on it like it was his idea all along.
Hard to have a "quiet word" about independence when we’ve already signed away the next few decades—and several hundred billion dollars—to stay tethered to the US. We’re basically locked into the guest room of the alliance for the foreseeable future.

@mojo Yeah... can't cut the apron strings when they're that tight about our own necks... :(

Too many right-wing people set these things up and then those to the left won't or can't take the actions to get us out. But then, Albo isn't all that far to the left, either.
