@daringfireball I’m sure you will not agree, but I hope this marks the start of a new era of more repairable Apple computers. (1/3)
Your take implies that the MacBook Neo is only repairable because it’s cheaper to assemble, subtly equating ‘premium’ with ‘unrepairable’. That is simply untrue, even malicious. While heavier components (like the mechanical trackpad) definitely lower the manufacturing cost, choosing screws over glue is just fundamentally good design. (2/3)
@daringfireball
Repairability shouldn't be relegated to being a side effect of a budget device. It is essential for consumers and the environment, and Apple should apply this logic across their entire premium lineup. (3/3)
@daringfireball
@danielmunoz @daringfireball if that were true i wouldn’t have AirPods or the Watch. reality: i don’t care about it. i want impossibly small devices, and i don’t care if they’re glued or whatever. when they’re EOL, I send them back to Apple for recycling and i’m 💯 fine with that.
@delric @daringfireball Those are different beasts. I am talking about computers.
@danielmunoz @delric AirPods are most definitely computers. The smaller a computer, the harder it is to assemble, and the more it needs adhesives because there’s not room for screws.
@danielmunoz @daringfireball I don’t read that in the post at all. What I gather from reading this is that *Apple* makes decisions that equate premium models with more difficult repairs. And that seems to hold true: the Neo has way fewer small parts, while an expensive MBP has many elements and connections (and glue) that make up the structure. A more simple design would make the build process cheaper, as a benefit at the cost of weight. It’s a trade-off of values.
@danielmunoz @daringfireball an MBP that’s more repairable will almost certainly be heavier, thicker, or have less battery life. I’ll take that trade-off myself, but Apple clearly weighs those values differently.
