Students or anyone who is the need for a free Linux Laptop?

We as Laptop Revive can provide one free of charge, no background checks. Just a friendly face and some basic agreements on paper and then we hand it over somewhere in the Netherlands.

Sounds like a miracle? No fact is that we already handed out more than 100 of them ! πŸ™‚πŸ‘

See https://laptoprevive.nl for the details

#Boosts are welcome

****** Sorry for some late answers. A bit overwhelming and heartwarming these kind reactions and words
******

I pass the messages to the volunteers, the person who made this happen (Rinus) is a true pioneer with a big ❀️

So limited to the Netherlands, primarily for students from Dutch schools and for asylum students for example. But others are welcome too. We do not have background checks.
But misuse is rare. We let them sign a form, to formalize the handover. No legal stuff.

@justdude Holy shit that's awesome.
@justdude is it NL only?

@Bobo_PK @justdude You might see if there's a Free Geek (https://www.freegeek.org/) near you. You profile makes me think you are located in CA, possibly Alberta, and I don't know of the Free Geek near there -- the closest I could think of would be the one in Vancouver, but they shut down in 2022.

The one near me (https://www.freegeekarkansas.org/home) continues to provide free laptops and desktops, and I still drop off any hardware I don't have a plan to use there.

@BoydStephenSmithJr @justdude thanks for the hint. Funny that I seem US based. We do have @computertruhe in Germany. They offer a similar service.

@Bobo_PK

> Funny that I seem US based.

Oh, hah! Yeah, that's me misreading your profile section "Alerta, Alerta" as "Alberta, Alberta". My bad. My eyes and assumptions keep getting worse as I age.

@BoydStephenSmithJr     I had a good laugh. Still thanks for the kind answer.
@Bobo_PK indeed... Sorry for that
But we have a lot of English speakers who study or are in the need for a laptop
@justdude no need to apologize. You are doing an awesome job. Keep up the great offer
@justdude It's just like a bag of candy we want to share?

@Morpurgo we want to share laptops people need in these strange times to gain access to essential knowledge and daily use.

Limited to the Netherlands.

@justdude Nice to see something like this here in the Netherlands.

@xinit indeed

The volunteers are happy to serve and smiles are exchanged when the handover is there

@justdude I'm in Zaan... considering options. I might send my kid to his middelbare tomorrow with deatails for his brugklas.
@justdude how awesome! I'm not in need of a laptop (and neither am I in the Netherlands) but I can think of situations where this would've been a lifesaver
@justdude
This is honestly one of the coolest initiatives I have ever seen. Would love to start something like this in my locality tooπŸ”₯
Very inspiring to be frank🫑
@justdude

@justdude this is a great idea. i would love to do this in my region. how do you source the laptops? are they ex business?
@vksxypants we get them for free from businesses and common people. Most are 3-4 years old, we have some entry checks.
@justdude When we switched to apple products last year in my school, I asked my IT guy what was happening w all the old Dell laptops and he just looked sad. The district has no plan to dispose of them and he'd basically been hoarding them in a closet. He brings me five a week now and I put Ubuntu mate on there and hand them out to kids. I've given out maybe 70 or so now, and have a weekly lunch bunch to troubleshoot and play around
@justdude @GeofCox I wish we could get some of these to Gaza.
@justdude that is awesome, I’m guessing this putting older machines and Microsoft abandoned perfectly good laptops to a good use

@justdude Hey @codemonkeymike you two should meet :)

@killyourfm @justdude holy shit.. i love this!

I run the Computer Upcycle Project here in the states and we've given out over 2,000 laptops so far.

Starter shell for Tailwind Plus templates.

@codemonkeymike @killyourfm remarkable numbers! Nice

@justdude @killyourfm and it's picking up... we're just getting started.

How are you setting them up for people? Would love to know more and just happy you're doing this there!

@justdude
That does sound like a miracle. Keep up the good work.
@bardmoss thanks, I will pass the message to our 70 volunteers
@justdude
I do have a friend in Netherlands who needs a new computer, she has tried Linux in the past but couldn't quite deal with it and didn't have anyone local to talk to. I told her about your organization and she is thinking about contacting you but I don't know whether it will happen.
@justdude This is great! My kid goes to middelbare school in Amsterdam and they insisted that they only support windows or apple 😑😑😑 I sent them to school with a Linux mint laptop anyway and it’s been fine so far, so I will pass this along to the school and see if they can see the benefits for low income kids (and saving e-waste of course).
@Frantasaur sure they are welcome.
The site has an overview of all locations, most swaps are done at train stations
@justdude oh wow! We are looking for just this. We want to organize a Linux install party and we were about to all chip in to buy some second hand thinkpads! Are we still in time?

@OpenTech_AUC we get them for free. We revise them, install etc and deliver them.

Sources are common people, businesses etc…

@OpenTech_AUC to add to this, we are part of NLLGG Linux user group, we have also install parties and support groups via BuurtLinux.

Welcome to join forces. Send an email.

@justdude Ok that sounds great. We'll reach out soon!
@justdude any pointers how to start getting HW to refurbish and give away?
@mdione we are contacting news papers for articles, local media, businesses, various sources.
They usually contact us via the website. Sometimes we get 10-20 at on e during replacement campaigns
@justdude and what's the setup, do they give them away, or do you need to be some kind of entity that can count for them as donations?
@justdude
I think about starting something like this in my community every day.
