While sites like https://jointhefediverse.net can be great at explaining basic concepts behind the fediverse, for most people, this can be all a bit overwhelming.

The best way to get people interested is to promote your own community. Show people where to sign up, which apps to use, and who to follow.

My latest project can help you with that.

@stefan this is cool. I would suggest that the the call to action button needs to be visible without scrolling. Currently it starts with a paragraph explanation. So if we're trying to reduce overwhelm, don't overwhelm with a paragraph of text before showing the button we actually want them to click on

@cubeofcheese Yeah, especially on mobile, this does feel like a bit too much explanation.

Good call, let me look into simplifying this. Thank you!

@stefan @cubeofcheese LoL Cool, the #TLDR peeps are a huge part of the target audience.

So to invite people to our cooperative community on the fedi, use this link to join @SocialCoop: https://invite.jointhefediverse.net/?server=social.coop

Thanks @stefan !

Your quick-start invitation to the wonderful world of the fediverse.

@Wtebbens My pleasure!

FYI, I just pushed out a small update to make URLs in server description clickable.

@SocialCoop

@Wtebbens @SocialCoop @stefan (fyi Ice Cubes might not be the best recommendation any more now that it's author/maintainer just accepted a job at OpenAI)

@stefan

Great idea, love it!

May I suggest a few changes?

The main page could say: join the fediverse and not ”what is”, if people got there they most likely just want to join. A link below can take them to the ”what is”

Then when they scroll down, the ”find a community” shows, rather than the ”what is” stuff - too technical and most wont care.

And for those that do not want to choose server: two buttons at the top will show:
Random server or Pick my own

Great job!

@ruthpozuelo Thank you, and thank you so much for the feedback!

This was kind of my point, I think https://jointhefediverse.net does work for a certain audience that wants to learn a bit more about how the fediverse works, while a customized version of https://invite.jointhefediverse.net works in other scenarios where you just want to get to the point and start onboarding people for a specific community.

Also, the "pick a random server for me" functionality I think will work a bit better after we can more easily migrate between servers, including our posts.

And it would require effort to moderate and carefully pick servers that get suggested, something I really don't have the bandwidth for right now.

Hope this all makes sense!

@stefan I did missed your point sorry! 🙈

I dont know how people land on each url, so no opinions from me.

When it comes to pick a random server, if the servers are big and stable enough, any server should do without any additional consideration.

I know stuff gets lost when migrating and i know some people care about that, but should be secondary when onboarding new people.

The barriers of entry needs to be lower to get non-tech/ i-dont-care people in, imo.

@ruthpozuelo Definitely agree on lowering the barriers, and a big focus of my own work!

"should be secondary when onboarding new people"
"big and stable enough"

I'd just feel pretty bad recommending even an established server where things may always go south, when people won't be easily able to migrate.

Big part of why I run my own server is that, after having to migrate from Twitter, I just wanted this to be my last social media account. Never have to worry about server mods feuding, or having my server shut down.

I do like Bluesky's concept of hosting just your data and letting others handle the rest of the social media stack, so maybe when this is implemented here, I might consider that for myself, and I'd also feel more comfortable suggesting others communities to join.

@stefan I know there are people like me that do not care about old posts. I did not saved my tweets when I deleted my account.

If you just say it upfront , people will be able to decide if it is important for them and act accordingly.

Either way, love your work. Thanks for all you do!
