The spike in fuel prices reminds us that Victoria once had electric regional trains, Melbourne to Traralgon 1956-1987.
Planning and funding electrification for V/Line, starting with the busiest lines, would help protect against future cost spikes, help cut emissions, and improve air quality.🚆⚡
@ptua is there a history for the other end? Always thought it odd that it was once electrified but no more. Also odd the V-locity aren't electric when in the area.

@LapTop006 @ptua the VLocity sets are direct diesel, not diesel electric.

That said, I think there’s scope to replace the diesel engine in one of the cars in a set with a battery powered electric motor, and I think https://januselectric.com.au/ would be an excellent place to start.

@waderoberts @ptua huh, that's actually surprising, I'd thought diesel electric was such a win that nobody bothered with anything else
@LapTop006 @ptua I think it was a dodgy deal with Cummins when they were being designed. https://vicsig.net/passenger/rollingstock/railmotors/VLocity
VICSIG

@ptua and then maybe Steamrail could restore an L class and run electric loco hauled heritage services....
@ptua >improve air quality
Especially in Southern Cross Station holy shit. As someone visiting Melbs, that was a shock.
@ptua Imagine how much better an experience it would be at Southern Cross without all the diesel fumes.
