hot take: bluesky isn't the enemy.

the real enemy is an internet of isolated islands that never talk to each other.

activitypub and bluesky should be a bridge towards the future, not a battlefield.

@dansup I mean, we can just ignore it and it'll go away. The trends are really, really bad on bsky.

Bluesky User Growth and Active Users

See how activity and usage of Bluesky has been growing over time. How many users are currently active? How many posts are posted daily on Bluesky?

@dansup For me it is.
Bluesky is only decentralized on paper and one buyout away from becoming X v2.
@dansup I agree! And there are already some initiatives aimed at building this bridge, such as the project https://fed.brid.gy, which should be supported.
@dansup I don’t think they’re the enemy in terms of competition with Fedi, nor do I think they’re a threat to Fedi’s long-term viability. I think there’s legitimate concerns for people who are investing time into building their community there though. Fedi has it’s own issues too as we all well know 🤷‍♂️

@dansup
I use https://brid.gy to cross-post my ActivityPub posts to Bluesky, but I can't really control that account:

Right now ActivityPub and Bluesky mostly connect through bridges. It works, but we probably need deeper interoperability in the future.

Bridgy

Connects your web site to social media. Likes, reposts, mentions, cross-posting, and more...

@dansup Any thoughts about Nostr? I’m really curious :3

@dansup

disagree. google centralizes the web and email even though they are built on open protocols. AT was created because the app view centralizes more than AP does and thus can support an ROI for VCs.

their goal is to be bigger than all the platforms by getting them all to interconnect and then becoming the best place to search it and provide the best experience.

the potential of AP is to provide an attention layer on the open web, not be something separate. to democratize reach.

@dansup ultimately I like activitypub architecturally. The kind of politics that I want to promote would I think be best promoted by the more federated model

But ultimately it doesn't really matter. The point is to undo the colonization that has been done to our attention and social relations. Whatever does that is good
