Attention #RSpatial community: NAD83 → NSRS and ETRS89 updates are hitting PROJ/GDAL/etc., potentially affecting sf, terra, gdalraster, vapour.

@nowosad Thanks! This is a heads-up, really, but if some of us can talk in Warsaw at useR! - if it is actually a concern - that would be a useful opportunity. I've drafted an abstract on the repo: any comments welcome on https://github.com/rsbivand/new_ref_systems
@rsbivand @nowosad when you say “prepare for incoming changes”, what exactly do you have in mind? What shall be done?
@martinfleis Thanks for asking! In the R-sig-geo post (link Readme in githhub repo), I linked to a thread from the PROJ list, which I'll add here. As the EPSG database is updated, newer versions may offer different, possibly sub-optimal transformation pipelines between CRS, as reference frame definitions are added. See the PROJ case from earlier this week: https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/proj/2026-March/012026.html
[PROJ] New national ETRS89 realisations in EPSG messing things up in PROJ 9.8.0?

@rsbivand thanks! I think I understand the issue. I still don't understand the subsequent steps in downstream packages. I am asking as this also affects behaviour of GeoPandas and it seems from you text that "we should do something”. Yet, I still don't really know what is that something, besides some temporary warning about potential change of behaviour.

For info this is the very US centric post from ESRI about it: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-pro/data-management/prepare-your-data-for-the-nsrs-2022

@rsbivand @nowosad I don't know R, but if I can help with the NSRS part, let me know.
@jjimenezshaw @nowosad Thanks, once there is any progress, your comments will be very welcome.
