Ok the world is genuinely terrible, but today in my garden I learned that I have a leaf cutter bee problem, which is the opposite of a problem. I have a friend.

Leafcutter Bees (Megachile)

@kate there's something in my garden that cuts little half moons out of the leaves but I think it's some kind of beetle
@Zumbador there are also leaf cutter ants, I think. Is yours specific leaves? Mine is roses.
@kate a range of different plants
@kate @Zumbador leafcutter bees love rose leaves

@kate

We don’t deserve this earth.

@Olson @kate The trilobites might take it back.

@cogdog @kate

I had to look that up. Ah.. eww!

@Olson @kate I did all my training for the technology field by getting 2 .6 degrees in Geology. Trilobites are cool.
@kate Leafcutters do block up some strange things in the garden. More than once I've been soaked because they've used a tap as a nest/store and it's taken a second or two to flush. I don't know if it's bees or other critters. We have little native bees and the blue bum bees, so maybe it's what you have. Bees are nice.
@ingram I’ve never come across the bags they make, and this is the first year I’ve noticed the leaf cutting. It’s such perfect craft, and rose leaves are ideal. One factor is that in both cases the affected plant is next to a wildly overgrown salvia which must be what’s bringing the bees in close. But this little friend isn’t the leafcutter I don’t think.
@kate I have those! You can get a bee hotel (wooden box with holes in it and they will nest in there and seal themselves in with the leaves. They seem to particularly like my rose plant's leaves.
