So many legal and policy experts blindly trust PhotoDNA as a useful tool to act on illegal content. It’s good to see technical experts deep dive into this!

@SuVergnolle Quite astonishing that just adding a border to an image will change its PhotoDNA hash value enough for it to be considered a different image.

How is this any use in detecting illegal images?

@SuVergnolle Historically it has been really hard to do this kind of research as access to PhotoDNA a has required signing legal agreements forbidding this kind of research (after previous schemes were broken). Great to see someone manage to do this. (Edit: fixed an autocorrect that confused the meaning.)

@DanielRThomas @SuVergnolle If legitimate research into the quality or security of a system isn't allowed, maybe that should be a hint to everybody. We never learn.
