These closures are obviously devastating for the workers concerned and their families and communities. 😭

It’s also very bad for local food production and reducing dependence on imports, just when the cost of fuel is sky-rocketing - not good timing.

Stuff

@simplicitarian this is definitely a worry 😢
@drwalters It’s also hard to imagine that part of Ōtepoti without the smell of burnt coffee 🤷🏻‍♀️
@simplicitarian @drwalters ‘burning the ribbons’ is what we call it on roasting day. Coz you know. Red ribbon roast 🤣🤣
@KateT @drwalters My walk between the bus hub and work used to include a range of interesting smells - the sickly sweet smell of pavlova from Cowells, burnt coffee from Greggs, and hops from Emersons 😆
@simplicitarian @KateT we always knew the wind direction if we could smell burning beans in the Commerce building 😂

My first job was an apprenticeship with printers Coulls Somerville Wilkie on what is now the site of a hospital which isn't being built.

Biking down Cumberland St from Stuart St you'd pass the Cadbury's factory with it's sickly sweet odour, followed by the (McLeod's?) soap factory which reeked of tallow.

The combination could be quite nauseating at times.

@BobLefridge @drwalters @simplicitarian my first job in Dunners was at cadburys. I lasted 3 days. That sickly smell put me off chocolate for months. Shortly afterwards I moved to a flat near speights. The smell from that put me off speights forever!

@simplicitarian 100% I’ve already spoken on here about living not far from there 😄

So sad to think of the people losing their jobs 😕

Stupid government. A chunk of me believes it wouldn’t have closed if the economy had been run by someone else…but I’ve accidentally wandered off into #NZPOL. Maybe it would have happened anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

@drwalters

@heyrochelle @drwalters Well, cost of living crisis isn’t helped by the current lot, and it means people buy the cheapest options, and those are often imported from countries with cheaper labour costs 🤷🏻‍♀️
@simplicitarian @drwalters I agree. In my Moray Place office in the eighties I could smell chocolate and coffee at the same time if the wind was right.
@simplicitarian I'm devastated about losing Mediterranean dips, they're one of my favorite snacks 😭
