Ha! Actually did a blind test a while ago again to find out if a) spending a lot on a new set of IEMs is still worth it at my age, and b) whether going for anything higher than 44.1 kHz & 16 bit in my music library would be. I got 18 out of 20 right in the „compressed vs. lossless“ test I picked.
Ended up buying mid-range ChiFi IEMs instead of a more expensive pair and will stick to ‚just‘ CD quality for rips and purchases.
@film_girl @wklj I went the other way a while back because I wanted to listen to music more intentionally again and I continue to be miffed by the fact that the lifespan of my AirPods is dictated by a consumable component. I do miss active noise cancellation sometimes, though.
After a lot (like _a lot_) of comparing of frequency charts, I bought the „Hisenior Mega7“. They a very good middle-of-the-pack IEM with modern tuning, similar to what you would see in the AirPods Pro or high-end Sony wireless in-ears.
I really like the sound and fit. Resolution is really good. They leave my 2019 Campfire Audio Andromeda in the dust and these cost more than double back then (today’s iteration of the Andromeda is even more expensive).

I fell for the "HiRes Audio" thingie initially, but quickly learned that it's soooo much more about the mastering and avoiding all the overly compressed streaming versions. I spent quite some time finding great masterings of music I love, which can often be found on cheap CDs.
As for wired IEMs, I was surprised to find how little money you have to spend. I got the LINSOUL KZ ZS10 Pro for about $50. Add a JCALLY JM20MAX Dongle DAC for $40 and you're in for a treat.
@film_girl am I being dim here? What's wrong with that McCarthy line? I think: nothing is wrong with it and it doesn't need any punctuation.
(also, good to see your 100% score!)
@film_girl It’s written in such a way as to try and insult you for enjoying actual human writing?
