Fairplayer is sort of like a federated Bandcamp...

"Fairplayer plays music from a decentralized ecosystem. Artists and communities publish their music on their own websites and link them to a player where the user can listen to them all."

Fairplayer

@rasterweb Sort of indeed. I buy my music on Bandcamp. That doesn't seem to be possible on fairplayer, that seems to be a streaming location.

@paulk Fairplayer pulls from Faircamp installations which bands/musicians can host themselves and sell through whatever means they choose.

It’s still early days for all of this, but it’s looking very promising.

@rasterweb you can follow the project here @fairplayer 😊
@rasterweb the desire to constantly centralise is actually disheartening as is the allergy toward normalising going to artists' sites. What if maybe we don't need a "fedi Spotify". And artists faircamps ARE already there.

Points for opt-in and all but it's just centralising embeds and minorly but notheless obscuring a more direct support via the actual artist run faircamp sites it is pulling from.

Pitfall concerns from missing the mark straight away:

This is not a directory since it is embedding a "stream experience" and could easily never leave the UE trap of just being an end-point for passive free consumption while presenting a red carpet for more cute dev "things to help artists" that will pummel the often very limited hosting resources the artists worked to setup, for potentially no benefit or discovery. Yet another unaffordable strain and stress on who is being claimed as helped.

More fun and direct for the artists to promote going to their sites/faicamps where download and support links are less lost and kind of the point.

A webring for independent artists and labels who use Faircamp to showcase their original work

@controlfreak I feel like it's early days and there is still a lot to do, but I'm open to ideas for now...

I'd love to see Fairplayer be able to just give me a mix of all the songs available, or maybe a specific genre... I think it *could* be a great tool for discovery.
