Reached the point where we internally need a small chat system @nzyme and looking info deploying a Matrix server.
@_lennart @nzyme it may be worth a self-hosted wire server instead, or possible discourse. the only things i ever hear about matrix are about how broken it is and how the e2e system doesnt work well and nobody can chat or see stuff
@_lennart @nzyme but if you do light up a self hosted wire server, im in :D
@Viss haha yeah, but I hear it has gotten much better 😅
@_lennart i was seeing people here screaming about it being horrible as recently as last week, so i wager the issues persist? but i guess they dont scream when the fixes land, so maybe they're in? its all reposts i was seeing at the time
@Viss I think it gets bad once you start to federate, but this one would only be internal
@_lennart @Viss Maybe wait a bit for Chatto (https://chatto.run) to manifest.

@falk_ @Viss I have heard good things about this as Matrix server and I'm happy to pay them: https://element.io/en
Element | Secure collaboration and messaging

Element is a Matrix-based end-to-end encrypted messenger and secure collaboration app. It’s decentralised for digital sovereign self-hosting, or through a hosting service such as Element Matrix Services. Element operates on the open Matrix network to provide interoperability and easy connections.

@_lennart @falk_ oh man, both of these look neat
@Viss @falk_ I am happily riding the wave of the Europeans finally funding their own software
@_lennart @falk_ i am trying to sweet talk sweden into letting me in :D
@_lennart oh no
@janl I hear it is better now and there will be no federation. Let's see lol
@_lennart I’ve been meaning to look into IRCv3, if that suits your needs, could be sinpler. Matrix is a pain even w/o federation :)
@janl @_lennart I've played with setting up https://ergo.chat/about a while ago to see what the experience was like. And it was fairly unproblematic. I'm not doing anything interesting with it (there's one channel on there that only has me in it), so it's not a good indicator for what it means to run it for a real use case. But getting it up and running was a good experience
