I'm looking for a simple web based chat app that I can selfhost . I'd prefer something with voice chat but I need to keep bandwidth low. IRC may be too key-board heavy for this use case

i ended up installing tuwunel, a matrix server. It seems to work fairly well so far and is lightweight.

(Some minor complaints about it not being slack in the beginning, but overall more positive feedback)

@equipo are experts at hosting it.

Chat systems have an exceptionally diverse set of use cases, so what works for us maybe shit for you of course. Love to hear what you end up with and why.
