I've been thinking about Tiny Balancing Sheep (TBS) & how my liking for them highlights one of the things I dislike about AI art (bear with me here).

I was on the lookout for an opportunity to snap myself a TBS this week. I failed (I will persevere).

But I could MAKE one really easily. I have loads of suitable photos & am a dab hand at editing.

But it would be lacking ALL the joy of finding a TBS & that's where all the value of the photo lies. It's the process.

Yeah, exactly. I'd argue that there's sort of a labor theory of value for art in that the end product isn't valuable through it's pure brute existence, but rather the way that this existence incorporates and concretizes the experience of the work that went into its creation and cognition expressed by its creator through this process, thereby making these accessible to the viewer and inviting them to participate in that creation. But AI art has none of this, it's the dead product of no experience, and it contains no labor. So however convincing the final output it's just inherently lesser than a real artistic endeavor.
