The UK continues to delude itself that it has the resources and equipment to be a great military power. It's a fantasy.

In 2009, the UK's #MOD told the #DefenceSelectCommittee that it could sustain readiness of at least 4 #Type45 #destroyers and usually 5, despite cutting the class from 12 ships to 6. The Committee was very doubtful.

In March 2026, #HMSDragon was the only Type45 available for service in Cyprus in the #IranWar.

The UK's military fantasies are out of date.

@2legged You’ve missed the best bit. The Navy can’t sail its stupendously expensive aircraft carriers anywhere (remember? The ones initially without aircraft) because there are insufficient destroyers or frigates to make protective carrier group. They’re now extra worried that the carriers could be taken out by cheap drones.

@christineburns To be fair, the carriers were never military weapons. The lack of escort ships killed that use from the outset, long before the no planes show.

The main purpose of the carriers was for Gordon Brown to bung billions in wages to Scottish shipyards.

The secondary purpose was as a giant floating phallic extension for people who get off on flags.

I thought it was all quite a good idea, because all that cash spent on useless toys meant less cash for invasions.
