ahhhh, that is what the response to LLMs reminds me of: COVID! It's the same shrugs shoulders "COVID is endemic, we should get used to it" response.
which isn't true! Nor are LLMs "inevitable"! Nor is regulation going to happen, so no, just saying "lmao oh well we should probably regulate that"... that is fucking abdication of responsibility.
@aud It certainly seems like LLMs are overextended in the sense that they are not profitable and yet being used everywhere, but I think it's another thing entirely to say that they are not ‘inevitable’. Surely any new technology that has at least *some* use is in some way inevitable? Even if it won't be main stream in a few years, there ought to be some company somewhere using it for some purpose, and I fail to see how we can prevent that…

@bemmesr @aud

They have use in formulating language.
They do not have any use as "AI". As "AI" they really are uselesa.

@Tuuktuuk @aud depends on what exactly you mean by AI but yes

@bemmesr @aud

AI would be something you can task to solve problems.

@Tuuktuuk Ah, so to you ‘AI’ is what is usually meant by ‘AI Agent’

@bemmesr

For me AI is artificial intelligence. So, not an LLM, for example.

@Tuuktuuk yeah that's fair. I tend to go by common use as opposed to literal definition, though I think both are valid ways to go about your life

@bemmesr

In this case the common use is based on a very big-time misunderstanding.

People assume that the LLM thinks. They think that what happens is that you explain the problem and get a solution.

What an LLM does is look for conversations where the same words as in the question (or their synonyms) appear and then outputs an answer that is typical for that question around the Internet.

It is based wholly on statistical analysis of words and includes no analysis of their meanings.

@Tuuktuuk yeah I understand that, but 'AI' as a shorthand name for a variety of machine learning models does predate the existence of LLMs as we understand them today. It's true that the name could be misleading, but it has precedence
