Hundreds of scientists say stop! โœ‹๐Ÿšจ

Governments should pause plans for mandatory #AgeChecks on online services until serious #privacy and #security concerns are addressed.

As countries push to ban children from social media, the risk to everyoneโ€™s privacy is growing. ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒ

@Tutanota Unfortunately this is not about childen's safety but about #surveillance, and governments and big tech companies want to destroy #privacy for the population in order to have more control and then leave true digital privacy only for themselves.
@Tutanota
"Came" and "adult sites" should be put wisely in the same sentence.
@Tutanota Energy accumulates wherever people gather and wherever there is abundant energy there will be those who seek to control it. Decentralize the energy โ€” Remove the control
@Tutanota Why don't you ask people in the country that already has restrictions on children's use of social media? Instead of speculating, ask us what it's like.
@anne_twain I realize you were asking @Tutanota - but I'm curious and so I'll ask... what is it like? What is your experience so far with the restrictions?

@danyork @Tutanota Thanks for asking. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I'm a retiree who spends hours on social media every day. I've never been asked to provide proof of age. What I'm hearing about kids in the banned age group is that not much has changed because they're finding ways around it.

My understanding is that the Australian law puts the onus on the platforms to exclude the underage kids. It's been said that social media platforms already know what age group you are anyway, because they profile everyone based on things like your interests, what you talk about, the words you use etc, and that's how they tailor the advertising you see.

@anne_twain @Tutanota Interesting. So at this point you havenโ€™t seen any new requests yet to provide proof of your age. I am not at all surprised about the kids - that is exactly what I would expect.
@danyork None at all. Its just been announced that if you want to visit " adult" sites, you'll have to prove your age, but I won't be visiting those anyway, so no loss.

@Tutanota

Time for an Internet 2 on OUR terms.

Was watching this today as I have long been interested in LoRa and Reticulum

OK its early days for this tech, but we see the demise of personal freedoms when combined with dictatorships is a nasty combination.

@Tutanota If parents would just parent, we wouldn't have this damn problem!

It's the same crap with video games. Censorship because "kids might see it". No, the parents can disallow their kids from looking at it.

@hellomiakoda @Tutanota Very well said indeed! This was my 2nd though about all of this Age Verification problem.
@Tutanota When I tried to create your e-mail it didn't work at all. So in your case there is no lockup needed for me at all - it was already denied.
@clock Hi! We were experiencing some issues but this has been resolved now. Could you try again please?

@Tutanota

Privacy is a human right, and includes anonymity

@Sassinake Exactly. Thanks for sharing this reminder.

@Tutanota and me that always said there is a simple way to do this without the need to rely on any third party crap to verify your identity.

blockage at isp level of dns and vpn until the landlord proved he is adult (witch is stupid but hey), and once he ask the disablement of the blockage he sign (electronically) that he will manage the computer in his home (once ok the dns lock is lifted)

for mobile it can be managed phone by phone

would be much more effective than the app / os level crap.

@Tutanota Woaahh this meme like pro privacy advocay is very good kudos ๐Ÿ‘€ ๐Ÿคฏ ๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿ™
@Tutanota @prosaole her er et godt emne til itpolitisk valgmรธde :)
@Tutanota pausing until concerns are addressed means its worth doing at all its not. the only reason this is happening is for authoritarians to surveil people.
