Super Robot Anime suggestions? - Divisions by zero

I’ve seen Gurren Lagann (10/10), Code Geass (8/10), and pretty much all of Neon Genesis Evangelion + movies and rebuilds. Are there any other really good super robot anime? I watched Darling in the FranXX and had a good time til about episode 18 or so when it jumped the shark. At one point I tried and dropped Eureka 7, just seemed really childish? Might need a revisit, but the MCs being so young was strange to me. What other mecha shows are worth the watch? I haven’t ever seen a Gundam show, but did watch Zoids as a kid, hah.

I liked The Big O personally, but it’s very short and highly stylized (if you like noir).
Oooh I have watched some of this back when it was on Toonami or some such. I’ll have to watch the whole thing.
Brave Bang Bravern! - A great show and one of the finalists for anime of the year from 2024 in this community. It never fails to escalate the weirdness while not losing touch with the heart and what it means to be a hero.
Brave Bang Bravern!

Bang Brave Bang Bravern is set in a world where humanoid armored weapons known as “Titatonostrider” (“TS” for short) are used in warfare. The story kicks off when troops from various countries converge on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, including the main characters, Ao Isami of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and Lewis Smith of the United States Marine Corps. Isami and Smith cross paths during battle, but suddenly their teams are attacked by an unknown enemy, scattering soldiers and sending their forces into disarray. In order to save their friends and survive on the deadly battlefield, they must fight with every ounce of courage and pride that they can muster.

I second this. The villain robots having “genuine people personalities” was a huge win for this show.
Genuine People Personalities

Genuine People Personalities or GPPs were an invention of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. These products were imbued with artificial intelligence and emotion, however, GPPs are known for being pointless or irritating, often serving their desired purpose but in an unconventional or unhelpful way. Marvin the android is an example of a Genuine People Personality. The starship Heart of Gold contained numerous Genuine People Personalities, which were advertised in the sales brochure, which...

Oooh a one and done type show? My kind of anime.
Gundam has a ton of flavours of Mecha anime depending on what you’re looking for, but my recommendation is ALWAYS 07th MS Team. It follows a single unit in a war and that focus on not being about giga-protagonists feels SO refreshing. You’re just watching a unit of grunts struggle to survive. Cogs in a machine so vast, that they can’t be heroes, just survivors. It also has some SUPER cool fight moments.
I love 08th MS Team! It’s so good
One of the Gundam movies was like that. Can’t remember the title, but it followed an unlikeable kid who befriended a terrorist cause he thought he was cool. Got both good and bad reviews cause well, yeah
Debatable but I think maybe Outlaw Star could count as a mecha anime, the grappler ships kinda control like a mecha
Was to be my rec also. Absolute banger anime and an all time favourite of mine.
“Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire” definitely counts as Mecha Anime. But that one is more from the WTAF territory.
Well, your obvious next move is 1978’s tokusatsu Spider-Man.
Macross and/or Robotech

Try for the original Japanese 80s Macross TV show. It’s packed with young animating talent of now-classic directors.

The movie Macross: Do You Remember Love is a classic.

Macross Plus was a sequel OVA series that has some nice jet fighter dogfighting sakuga.

Macross plus another vote here. Favorite all time. Also amazing sound track
First off, I’m gonna say Eureka 7 is a show that gets better as it goes on. Also, I saw that someone was recommending Brave Bang Bravern which is a favorite of mine. If you want something a little more classic though definitely check out Gunbuster (also known as Aim For the Top). It’s only 6 episodes and it’s some of the coolest stuff I’ve ever seen. Really good depiction of time dilation.

The first season of Aldnoah.Zero plotted by Gen Urobochi is a fucking brilliant concept: Think Patlabors piloted by a genius vs high end Gundam fantasy mecha. The second season was meh though.

Speaking of Patlabors, the Patlabor Movie 1 and Patlabor Movie 2 both directed by the great Mamoru Oshii are really great.

It’s more like sentai tokusatsu robots (think the Mega Zords from Power Rangers) but SSSS.Gridman is a cool reboot of a vintage Tsuburaya (Ultraman) Productions live action show.

Along similar lines, Samurai Flamenco is another fun take on tokusatsu heroes, complete with a combining sentai robot, which admittedly only shows up towards the end of the only season.

Have to second Samurai Flamenco. It’s not technically a mech anime, but if Gurren Lagann was 10/10 for OP, there’s a good chance they’ll really enjoy it!

Knights of Sidonia has great visuals and lore ideas but boring storytelling and characters.

Argento Soma had interesting aliens and story but the robots were pretty basic looking.

Bokurano has great visuals and very interesting story, but it has some heavy topics. (Epstein related…) Also I think the manga is better, but the p is worth just for the song.

Fullmetal Panic has move robot battles, but you might not like the combination of highschool sillyness and serious war story.

FLCL

Attack on Titan (technically speaking, they’re fleshy super robots)

Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

I almost mentioned AoT in the body lol. I enjoyed the manga.

Iron Blooded Orphans I’ve heard of. I’ll add it to the list.

Planet With reminded me of Gurren Lagann quite a bit and I thought it was fun
Is that anything like Snowball Earth? I liked that manga a lot.
I haven’t read snowball earth so honestly, no idea. It looks interesting tho so I might pick it up lol
