“Lawrence Summers has lost his affiliation with America’s leading economics organization, the latest consequence for the former Treasury secretary and Harvard president stemming from his ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein.

“The National Bureau of Economic Research said an ad hoc committee reviewed Summers’s conduct and recommended the termination of his appointment as a research associate with the organization.”

@heidilifeldman

So, like, did he do something illegal? Has the statute of limitations expired? Isn't this something we do anymore?

@mastodonmigration @heidilifeldman

As I understand it, he violated ethical guidelines in mentorship in a way that is unethical but not illegal.

I mean, he’s done plenty of distasteful stuff, but this was what specifically got the economists at the AEA to give him a lifetime ban.

@mastodonmigration @heidilifeldman
He was a publicly misogynistic scumbag. Harvard knew it and ignored it until the Epstein stuff came out and showed him doubling down on the misogyny in private conversations and discussing his predatory sexual intent regarding a young woman he was mentoring.

And I'd be surprised if no other students/interns had reported him to Harvard previously.

@me_valentijn @heidilifeldman

Oh, he certainly deserves everything that is happening to him. The point is shouldn't he and others of his ilk also be investigated and face real legal consequences for criminal behavior?

@heidilifeldman Summers may have "lost" this position but but he remains on Harvard's payroll.
Larry Summers Will Resign From Harvard After Jeffrey Epstein Revelations

Mr. Summers, former president of the school, had stepped back from teaching after documents showed a closer relationship to Jeffrey Epstein than previously known. He will leave at the end of the academic year.

The New York Times

@heidilifeldman Not true. Summers continues on the payroll:

. “Free of formal responsibility, as President Emeritus and a retired professor, I look forward in time to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on a range of global economic issues,” [Summers] said.

Despite repeated calls for the university to revoke his tenure, the economist held onto his teaching and academic appointments until he chose to retire.

@Axomamma does Harvard pay emeritus profs? Georgetown certainly does not!
@heidilifeldman A distinction without a difference. He's still "honored," he's still making bank on that relationship. Summers wasn't fired, he resigned. In other words, Harvard is giving him "retirement" money. Harvard is no hero here.
@Axomamma I totally agree re Harvard. They should have refused him emeritus status.
