#ScoutingUK

Most weeks I’m fair certain what we’re doing.
Tonight was pencilled in in January, and planned for extensively about a month ago, however my leader that wanted to run it was away on a training course so we pulled the idea for the summer term.

I was going to do lamps and stoves, but one of the other leaders didn’t like that idea.
There was mention of a campfire?
But we didn’t commit to anything.

So I checked OSM before leaving the house and realised we still didn’t have a plan, it was too wet for a fire, and for the first hour it was just myself and one other leader.

We have a camp coming up so I asked each patrol to plan some activities to run in the free time I’ve given them. We then voted on what activities we wanted to do on camp.

Next we go up and played a game of jump over the rope. You may recall I made a monkeys fist on the end of a length or rope so I can swing it around in a circle at feet level and the Scouts have to jump over it. It tires them out, and they love it

After a short break I got them sitting in a circle. I posed the question “tell me a story about a polar bear coming for dinner”, but each Scout could only contribute one word and we can go round and round. They enjoyed this and came up with an interesting story.
Next I asked the to do the same but tell me about ingredients for a cake, so they did.
Then I asked how to make a cock-a-leekie soup - they had no idea and gave me a bunch of interesting items.

I told them that during the three rounds that they had each taken their lived experiences and knowledges, and what had already been said to give me an answer.
I then asked how many of them had used AI chatbots - and belatedly introduced them to “Scout GPT”, stating that they had roughly performed what an AI chatbot does.

We rounded off the evening with a couple of rounds of Werwolves.

@forquare Great OSM photo.

@hischeekiness @forquare great save i'd say Ben! I like the ScoutAI trick 🙂

I am doing the final cooking part of chef badge with my Cubs tomorrow .. much shopping to do 😁 Wish me luck!

@Slash909uk @forquare Last time we did that we made Pizzas…

Guess what we’re doing next Term? 😆

Good luck. 👍

@Slash909uk @hischeekiness

All the best for tomorrow! May the cleanup time be low, and the burn count even lower.

@forquare @hischeekiness happy to say the Cubs managed to cook 3 different mains and desserts.. I even ate one for my dinner 😊

Cleanup took about an hour for three of us!

@Slash909uk @forquare How long are your Meetings?

Ours have reduced to 1h15 since last we did proper cooking.

@hischeekiness @forquare same, 75min. Leaves about 45min for the major activity. We have to finish as the Scouts follow us with a 15min break. Hikes we can take longer, but I have to plan around parents who have Cub and Scout age YP, so they have time to drop off at the hall and then collect their Cub from wherever we ended up! Scouts have the same constraints.

@Slash909uk @hischeekiness

Out of interest, to both of you, why are the sessions 75 minutes?
Is hall/leader availability, always been that way, or something else?

@forquare @hischeekiness Hall costs mostly. We run Cubs and Scouts on the same night to keep the cost down. Cant start too early or finish too late, hence 75min is what we have; 6->7.15pm

We used to have only Beavers and Cubs on Monday and Tuesday (no Scouts.) We added the Scout section later to Tuesdays booking.

Hall rental per year is considerably more than our capitation so we can really add another night to it. We have had to increase our subs by 50% over the last 18mth to cover the costs.

@Slash909uk @forquare Nothing to do with venue costs for us, it’s our Hut.

Simply put, it was Leader considerations & availability at the time. They had a things like a long commute and/or had job and/or family responsibilities that a slightly later start time would ease the pressure off, so we collectively agreed to start at 7:15. Was 7pm when I started.

As I have been either sole Section Leader or doing much of the workload for a lot of the time since I’ve kept it to give less time to fill.

@Slash909uk @forquare …There should be 4 or 5 of us towards the end of this year so I am hoping to get back to 90 minutes.

And my stint at Beavers *should* be over soon. Though I’m trying to add a Drey…so…😆
