i honestly can't sing the praises of mistserver enough as a discord replacement from the streaming angle, at least 1:1 with another person (alongside using signal for voice/video/chat)

https://mistserver.org/

@scarlet_somnus was streaming via obs using the whip protocol to my server from the UK (my server is sitting on my desk in minnesota) and we were consistently at less than 1 second of latency with a good quality, stable stream

if you're interested, feel free to message me with questions

it took me a single afternoon to set it up on my debian web server that has nothing but apache running otherwise

and i am not someone who heavily uses self-hosted solutions at all and i was able to get it going

#mistserver #discord #signal #obs #streaming

at this point i have zero reason to ever use discord again
@eri @scarlet_somnus thank you I needed this information.
@eri And one would use this over something like Owncast since it offers password protection? (Couldn’t find screenshots on the site, so unclear about interface.)
@helianthropy that unfortunately i can't speak to, i've never used owncast
@helianthropy i will say i password protected the link you have go to to watch the stream, just through other means
@eri Owncast is a public, single stream setup with ActivityPub integration for account verification and notifications with integrated chat (with moderation tools) and some limited API for other integrations. (Comparable to Twitch in being able to be centrally listed.)
@helianthropy yeah it's sounded neat from what i've read about it, i just haven't used it
@eri I logged on to make a similar post lol!
Worked great and makes me excited to get away from discord
Also shout out to Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter being one of the best games ever made
