I have a really nice (subjective) set of ancient oil pastels that I have not touched since maybe 2006. Adult me has no ideas for drawing/painting/making anything, because I don't currently have enough skills to conceptualize things I could actually make, and also because if I'm honest I have been feeling pretty tense and repressed.

Art people, do you know of any good beginner exercises or simple projects? Or ideas to get things going? I want to play with my pastels and paints but I don't want to waste them.

OH BOY DO I EVER

gesture drawings are a great warmup if you haven't drawn in a while; they're supposed to take anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes, which takes away the pressure to have a perfect drawing and shifts the focus towards just completing *a* drawing (you don't have to use your pastels for this, a pencil/pen and some scrap paper will do the trick!) Proko has some great videos on gesture drawing, if you're interested!

photo studies, or studies of paintings that you like, are also a great exercise to ease into it, because the composition/colors/etc are already done for you and you just have to copy - frees your brain up to focus on techniques

and here are a couple of tutorials using oil pastels that look pretty easy and fun! https://ca.pinterest.com/pin/711216966188899321/
