Fukushima, Japan. The 2011 tsunami struck this seaside school, which stood only 250m away from the coast.

Disregarding the protocol to shelter in-place, staff and students instead fled to high ground. As the wave inundated the school, this action saved 100 lives as water reached the gym ceiling.

@ObsidianUrbex It's a miracle they disregarded the protocol since it's heavily frowned upon in the japanese culture, even in situations where it doesn't make sense.

I really appreciate the history you add to your photographs. Helps me getting transported there.
As a side note, I'm impressed by how much they decided to raise the floor here. I'm guessing an architecture practice to preserve the wood from ground humidity. @ObsidianUrbex
