happy Sunday, here's why so many folk stick around on those enshittified platforms, even though they don't really like them anymore: It's because it's Hard ™️ , and that's by design.

🕸️ Caught in a Multi-Billion Dollar Web: Why Leaving the Legacy Algorithmic Media is So Hard

Network effects, switching costs, and what does it mean for a platform to "work," anyway?

Technically Good ✨
@technically_good You forgot something, no algo means it's really hard to get a tl you like, that is not boring and not getting spammed by every post in existence from the person you follow ! I switched for ideological reasons and that's the only reason people switch because the experience here is overall worse even if less angry/stressful.
.
@technically_good The fediverse is not good for the average person if it does not change, we have seen that with the twitter exodus ! The majority of people who wanted to switch went to bluesky because it had an algo
@fwtl @technically_good, perhaps algorithms should be optional, depending on an instance, rather than a characteristic of Mastodon as a whole
@strider @technically_good I think less standardisation brings even more confusion to new people but yeah that can be an option
@fwtl @technically_good, it does, I do remember my first encounter with Mastodon. In this case, maybe a few bigger instances can be recommended as a "beginner's kit", similarly like mastodon.social is now (it's not necessarily recommended but I assume it looks appealing to novices due it's popularity)
@technically_good, oh also, your post inspired a new meme (in a good way)
