Roof Update: wall now cleared in the main. We did find a lot of sand and rubble behind the lathe. It is likely that this was causing our damp problems - acting as a wick between the stone wall and the lathe and plaster interior. #HouseRestoration #StormAmy #Damp

@Janet_52square

That certainly will wick moisture.

I've seen old cottages etc being renovated here and they put the kind of damp-proof membrane (Plastic sheet?) as used in solid concrete floors on the stone wall, then battens & insulation followed by an special plasterboard/drywall that has foil, plastic, insulation and plasterboard all in one.

No kind of drywall/plasterboard is accepted at the recycling centre as it's all composite.

Check the fire rating. Some Kingspan burns too well.

@raymaccarthy We’ve been advised only to use breathable membrane/insulated plasterboard so no Kingspan and nothing foil backed. A guy is coming to give us prices this week. 🤞

Good.
Glad you found an obvious cause.

There was an insulation grant here and loads of approved installers "retrofitting" foam to cavities caused huge dampness and mould issues. More sane companies added internal drywalls and/or non-flammable external cladding. Especially on cavity block build houses.

Also a disgrace was that cavity blocks with no external or internal insulation were allowed for houses here till recently.

My shed is cavity block which makes it cold and damp.
