They asked an LLM for military targets and are shocked it hallucinated one at the site of a school.

There has never been a technology so readily capable of erasing intelligence and reason.

@twipped Which is really weird, because it goes against the usual grain of the pattern. The Bolsheviks, in particular, were extremely fond of micromanaging everything personally. The Original Nazis seem to have been a bit more willing to delegate, but still micromanaged heavily.
@riley @twipped Well, the "i was just following orders" had been proven to be an invalid defense, so now they are testing the "a computer did it while i was away".

@theartlav Maybe it has something to do with a combination of desiring the æsthetics of being a mighty war general and also desiring to not do any work of generaling a war, which is hard.

@twipped

@riley @theartlav @twipped

We might conclude wars get innocent people killed. Assholes get medals.

@twipped Alternatively: they used training data of the sites that IDF bombed.
@twipped consider: they might use it for plausible deniability regarding whether they did war crimes on purpose. Israel did this heavily in Gaza. "AI" laundering of war crimes seems to be the hot new thing.
@matt @twipped Are we sure the school target incident was due to an AI? I think we'd better be careful before making those kinds of accusations. We must resist in ways that are effective and disinformation destroys our credibility. Militarys have been making targeting mistakes since the beginning of humanity.
@darrell73 You're right. I've retracted that boost.
@matt Np. I'm sure I've done this a time or to as well. Thanks.

Exclusive: AI Error Likely Led to Iran Girl's School Bombing

Pentagon investigators believe a bombing of a girls' school in Iran on Saturday likely resulted from inaccurate information provided by AI.

@twipped According to Swedish tv, the school had a military site next door. That is... awful town planning.
